Asking Apprentices

Tradies put in the hard yards every day, but there’s plenty to love about the job. For Hunter (Plumber, VIC), it’s the variety that keeps things exciting. “I love meeting new people, the versatility of the work I do, and learning hands-on skills.” No two days are the same, and there’s always something new to tackle. For James (Sparky, VIC), it’s the challenge that makes it rewarding. “Every day is different, and you’re constantly learning and problem-solving, which makes it exciting to come into work".

Starting out as an apprentice can be a steep learning curve, but the right mindset makes all the difference. We asked James and Hunter what advice they’d give to those just getting started. James believes asking questions is key. “Ask heaps of questions, especially if you’re unsure about something. It’ll help you get a better understanding and show your tradesmen that you have a good attitude.” Hunter agrees that learning from those around you is crucial. “Listen to everything your qualified has to say, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Also, buy quality tools.”

Having quality gear is super important as a new apprentice, you want gear that is comfortable, suits the specific needs of your industry, and lasts. Hunter's go to gear are the "Oliver AT-55 Elastic Sided Boots" and prefers lightweight, well ventilated short-sleeve shirts (currently wearing Hard Yakka). James' favourite gear are the Steel Blue Argyle Boots – he recommends "... treat[ing] yourself to some good boots since you’re on your feet all day" and the FXD WS-4 Shorts – as they're "breathable, lightweight and comfortable".
